When does your brain function at its best?

23-02-2016

When is the best time to study when living with roommates in Barcelona? When is your brain working at its optimum? When exams come around, the question always remains: Better to study during the day or at night?

First we have to take a step back and evaluate what kind of person we are: a dayhawk or a nightowl? Taking this into account will help you realize the energy and enthusiasm you put forth when it comes time to retain information. Once this is clarified, we give you some pros and some cons for each.

Studying during the day

  1. You have had a good night’s sleep and your brain is rested. Being that it is unclouded you are able to concentrate better.

  1. During the daylight hours people tend to be more active and of course available. Taking this into account any doubts that you might come across while you are studying can quickly be resolved by your classmates or your tutors. What’s more, is that these are peak working hours, so the library and other business will be open in the case that you need to consult some information or make copies. Even in your apartment you’ll be able to track down your classmates should you have any concerns about the subject material.

  1. Daylight helps prevent fatigue. Plus, if you’re one of those people who don’t easily get distracted, consider going to study at a park or a terrace. Get outside!

The day also has its obstacles

  1. It favors the chance of more distractions. Incoming calls or texts, unexpected visits or spontaneous errands, interrupting ones study hours.

  1. It’s also the time of day where you can enjoy and participate in the most leisure activities. Sometimes distractions should be welcomed that way you don’t overdo it on the studying.

Studying at nighttime

  1. The moment when the entire world is at home resting. It tends to be more silent and calmer with fewer distractions. Even though living in an apartment complex full of students, one never knows if that is guaranteed.

  1. No matter where you study during exams anywhere you go is going to be completely maxed out. This is a time where you can enjoy some privacy and solidarity: either at home, the library or even your residence hall.

  1. The night also has a way of inspiring us and making us more creative.

The night also has its inconveniences:

  1. To be able to study at night we resort to the powers of coffee and other stimulants. Because we force our mind to function at higher speeds once the moment comes to crash, it can result to be quite the challenge.

  1. Night tends to come many hours after a day full of activity, and for that reason our efficiency levels are not where they should be. Fatigue creeps in and makes us feel drowsy which as a result complicates the learning process and absorption of new ideas and concepts.

  1. Two words. “All nighter.” Studying at night doesn’t allow us to get those much needed hours of rest. Less sleep, results in a weaker performance the following day.

Taking into consideration all of these points we are sure you will be able to find the best hours of study suited to your needs.
